Feeling like a gypsy. Embracing the change that is upon us. new beginnings. Nick knacks and rouge coins from my mother’s adventures. I create talismans to guide you on your journeys. Wishing growth. Found some gold bangles my mother gave me. She brought them from Trinidad. They go well with the bracelets I’ve been making lately. That’s no surprise. I’ve always admired my mother’s aesthetic when it came to bracelets. They would jingle dingle, alerting you of her regal presence. My mom still is so fly. Elegant. Graceful. I love my mom #jewelry #janeticsink #bracelet #trinidad #memories
Ive made a promise to myself to create at least 5 projects a day.
On my first day, I made 6 reconstructed shirts. So 1980s of me, and I love the results.
Cozy.
No sewing involved.
The shirts cover my massive chesticles when I wear my camisoles and sports bra making for a less revealing hooping session.
The project took all of 5 minutes to make, including “which tshirt am I going use?” thought time. At HoopCon, Bex, taught a class that I missed for a contact hooping workshop. Thankfully I have a book and Pinterest that helped educating me on the reconstruction.
Anywho, here’s me in my new hooping/ gardening/ crafting/ being a bad ass/ swimsuit cover/ house working shirt.
The bright orange parade marshall shirt, was my dad’s. He was usually one of the parade marshall during Carnival parades.
Struttin.
Pliers and scissors in his back pockets.
A big ass video camera on his shoulder.
Nikon hanging around his neck.
Classic dad

This is meh motha in deh Trini papa’ playin mas in deh band call’ Revellers. Mad fete, boy.
English translation: my Mother made the newspaper during her time dancing in the streets of her homeland during carnival. It was a real good time.
This is where I get it from. My effervescence come from her. My artistry, my dad. Mom claims to not be able to draw a stick figure.
My mom would kill me if I told you her age.
She’s a jet setter.
Classy too.
Witty.
Spontaneous.
So fabulous if a drag queen needed a muse, they would need to simply call my mother.
She can still hit the streets and dance with all smiles and zeal.
Those white teeth!
Damnit, I love her.
Mom+Dad= Good genetics
The wedding quilt…
Let me tell u a story: my husband’s family are proud and loud rednecks (MIL words, not mine). . 4wheeling. Shotguns. Confederate flags. NASCAR. Southern Baptist etc.
I am a first generation Trini American from the suburbs of MD/DC/VA. when I walked into that family picnic 13 yrs ago, it was a culture shock. That was followed by 6 months of waiting in car whenever we had to go to their house for anything.
Eventually my MIL and I will bond over crafting. Ceramics. Stained glass.
Fast forward 3 years. Our wedding. 200 people. Big Cinderella dress. My mother in law worked on this quilt for 2 years! Handstitched, baby. No machine was used.
Scalloped edges.
I feel so warm under those stitches. It’s her saying “I love u and welcome to the family”.
Trinidad, my roots… My family just returned from Carnival recently and I scored big Stateside. My girl, PolyesterStella, makes amazing jewelry, often time w foreign coins. I love her work and have started incorporating coins in my work. Specifically USA pennies from ‘78, ‘84, ‘96, ‘00 (I stamped “luck” in each) and coins from Trinidad. My whole life I’ve had a pet peeve that people automatically think Jamaica when mentions of the Carribbean. There’s other islands, people! We created calypso and steel pan. We have Carnival. Home to the world’s largest pitch lake and roundabout. Clear water beaches. Lime on the Savannah sometime. Have some coconut water. I will infuse my People’s culture and jovial spirits in each piece. Necklaces and Bracelets on ballchain. Make that ish happen.
